In fact, I think I would go even further---because I think what Mike shared is true not only of actions we might take to engage the spiritual world--it is true of any action we may take. That is, whenever we act with a motivation that is selfish, deceitful or vicious, this is very dangerous. It is dangerous, not only to others, which is sort of clear---but also to ourselves as well. We may be trying to gain some benefit---and we may in fact "seem" to acheive our narrow goal in the short term---but there will be long-term, perhaps unforseen consequences that will ultimately not be positive. And that is true, regardless of whether we are trying to influence the physical world by spiritual means, or by more "conventional" means. Every act has consequences---and the boundaries between others and our self is not quite as real as it may seem. Various traditions have different views on the nature of the spiritual realms. I think that engaging the spiritual world with the intent of influencing the physical world is very dangerous. There are a lot of ways to engage that realm, but many are unsafe and harmful, especially when the motivation is selfish, deceitful, or vicious. But that's part of what makes it so enticing.
